How the Karakas Are Assigned

Take the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn, note how many degrees each has travelled into its sign, and sort them highest to lowest. That is the whole calculation.

The highest becomes the Atmakaraka, the second the Amatyakaraka, and so on down to the seventh, the Darakaraka. Nothing else about the chart affects the ordering — not sign, not house, not strength.

These are the chara or movable karakas of Jaimini astrology, distinct from the fixed karakas of Parashari astrology in which the Sun always signifies the father and Venus always the spouse. Both systems are in use, and they are not in conflict; they are different lenses.

What Each One Indicates

Atmakaraka is the soul indicator, and is read as the most significant of the seven — the chart's central theme, what a life keeps returning to.

Amatyakaraka covers career and counsel. Bhratrikaraka siblings and courage. Matrikaraka mother and emotional grounding. Putrakaraka children and creativity. Gnatikaraka obstacles and what must be worked through. Darakaraka the spouse.

The Darakaraka in Marriage Analysis

This is where the chara karakas get used most in ordinary practice.

The Darakaraka is taken to describe the partner — their nature, and something of how the marriage unfolds. It is read alongside the seventh house and the Navamsa rather than instead of them, and it often adds a specificity the house analysis alone does not give.

Seven Karakas or Eight

Two schemes exist and it is worth knowing which you are looking at.

The seven-karaka scheme uses the Sun through Saturn, and is what this page shows. The eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu, whose degree is counted in reverse since it moves backwards.

Practitioners differ on which to use, and the two can give different assignments for the lower karakas. This is a genuine methodological division rather than one being wrong, and any tool presenting a single answer without mentioning the other is overstating the certainty.

Why Birth Time Matters So Much Here

The ordering is decided by degrees, and two planets can sit within a fraction of a degree of each other.

The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so a birth time off by twenty minutes can change its degree enough to swap it with a neighbour — and with it, potentially, the Atmakaraka itself.

If your top two planets are close, this page flags it. Where the birth time is remembered rather than documented, that flag is worth taking seriously, and rectification is the honest next step before building anything on the result.

What This Page Does Not Do

Jaimini astrology is a substantial system with its own aspects, its own dashas — Chara Dasha chief among them — and its own rules for reading the Karakamsha. The karakas are the entry point, not the system.

Knowing your Atmakaraka is genuinely interesting and does not on its own tell you much. What it points to is a particular planet worth examining closely in a full reading.
