Vastu Tool

Vastu Direction Finder

Take a compass reading at the centre of your property facing the main door, enter the degrees, and get your facing direction with the full zone map.

Stand at the centre of your home facing the main entrance. Keep phones, laptops and steel almirahs well away — they pull the needle. Take the reading two or three times.

How to Take the Compass Reading Properly

Everything in a Vastu assessment is built on this one measurement, and it is the step most often done carelessly.

Stand at the centre of your property and face the main entrance. Hold the compass flat and level. Keep phones, laptops, steel almirahs, electrical panels and metal furniture well away — all of them pull the needle noticeably, sometimes by fifteen degrees or more.

Take the reading two or three times from slightly different points in the central area. If the numbers agree within a few degrees, you have something reliable. If they swing considerably, something nearby is interfering — move and try again.

Record the actual number rather than a description. A property at 38 degrees and one at 62 degrees might both be loosely called north-east, but they sit at opposite ends of the same sector and are assessed differently.

Why Degrees Matter More Than Cardinal Names

Each of the eight Vastu sectors spans 45 degrees. A reading close to a boundary means a small compass error — or a phone left in your pocket — could place your property in the neighbouring direction entirely.

The tool above flags this automatically when your reading sits within three degrees of a sector edge. If you see that warning, take the reading again carefully before relying on the result. It is the single most common source of error in remote Vastu assessments.

The Eight Zones and Their Planets

Each direction is traditionally governed by a planet, and that governance is what the zone associations follow from. North is Mercury and relates to income and opportunity. North-east is Jupiter and relates to clarity. East is the Sun, health and recognition. South-east is Venus and carries the fire element. South is Mars. South-west is Rahu and governs stability and holding. West is Saturn. North-west is the Moon and relates to movement.

This mapping is the basis of Astro-Vastu, where the directions a chart supports are prioritised over a general list — which is why the same correction helps one person and does very little for another.

Is a South or West Facing Property Bad?

No, and this belief costs buyers real money in the Indian property market.

Classical guidance associates facings with different pursuits rather than ranking them. East is associated with study and scholarship, north with administration and authority, south with business and management, west with service and support work. All four are treated as workable for a home.

What is true is that south and west facing properties need more thought in design, because the approach side takes more afternoon heat. That is an architectural consideration, not a curse. And because the belief persists, south facing properties often sell at a discount for reasons that have more to do with sentiment than substance.

Flats, Independent Houses and Plots

The reading is taken the same way in all three, but the centre point differs.

For a flat, stand at the centre of your own built-up area and face your flat main door — not the building entrance, which is shared by every family in the tower and is not your Vastu unit.

For an independent house, the centre of the built structure, facing the main door.

For a plot you are considering buying, the centre of the land, facing the road side you would enter from.

What to Do With Your Zone Map

Once you know where the directions actually fall, walk your home with the map and note what occupies each zone. The most common discovery is that the north-east — which the tradition asks to be the lightest, clearest part of a home — is being used as a store room, simply because it happened to be the least-used corner.

That single finding, and its correction, is free. It is also the change households most consistently say they noticed.

Want This Checked Properly?

These tools cover the findings that account for most of what a real assessment turns up, and they are free. What they cannot do is take a compass reading at the centre of your property, see your actual layout, or tell you which two or three corrections matter most for your home rather than in general.
