Mirror Placement

Moving a mirror is among the easiest corrections there is — nothing structural, no cost. Which is why it is worth getting right.

About the Mirror

Why Mirrors Get So Much Attention

Partly because the tradition does treat reflection as significant, and partly because a mirror is one of the few things in a home that can be moved in five minutes.

That second reason matters more than it sounds. Most Vastu findings are structural and cannot be acted on. A mirror can, which is why it appears in almost every consultation as something to actually do.

The Preferred Walls

The north and east walls are the standard recommendation, the north-east acceptable. The south, south-west and south-east are traditionally avoided.

The reasoning follows the general logic: the north and east are the zones associated with light and openness, and a mirror extends that.

The One Worth Acting On

A mirror facing the bed.

Traditionally avoided, and this is also the placement most consistently reported as a practical problem in home assessments. Movement caught at the edge of vision disturbs sleep, and people frequently do not connect the two until the mirror is moved or covered.

A wardrobe door is usually all that is involved, and angling it, moving it or covering it at night solves the whole thing. Of everything on this page, this is the correction most likely to produce a noticed difference.

Cracked and Chipped

The one point every tradition agrees on, and the only genuinely non-negotiable item here.

A cracked mirror is replaced or removed. It is also a safety matter, which is reason enough on its own.

Facing the Entrance

Views genuinely differ, and it is worth being honest about that rather than picking a side.

Some traditions hold that a mirror facing the main door reflects arriving energy back out. Others place one deliberately at an entry to make a small space feel larger, which is standard practice in interior design and not objected to.

Where a mirror at your entrance is doing a useful job and nothing feels wrong, there is no strong reason to move it. Where you have a choice, a side wall rather than directly facing the door satisfies both views.

What Not to Worry About

Mirror advice attracts a great deal of invention — claims about specific shapes bringing specific outcomes, about mirrors needing to be a certain size, about numbers of mirrors in a room.

The traditional material is narrower than the internet suggests: wall direction, what is reflected, and keeping them clean and intact. That is most of it, and the rest is usually someone with something to sell.

Want This Checked Properly?

These tools cover the findings that account for most of what a real assessment turns up, and they are free. What they cannot do is take a compass reading at the centre of your property, see your actual layout, or tell you which two or three corrections matter most for your home rather than in general.
