Where a Septic Tank Belongs
The north-west is the standard recommendation and the clear first preference. The west is acceptable.
Traditionally avoided: the north-east above all, since that is the zone kept cleanest and lightest; the south-west, which should stay solid and undisturbed; the south-east, being the fire zone; and the east.
What Outranks the Direction
Sealing and smell together carry half the points in the check above, and that reflects reality rather than being a rhetorical gesture.
An unsealed or cracked septic tank is a health and groundwater matter. A tank in the perfect zone that leaks is a far worse finding than one in a poor zone that does not, and any assessment that notes the compass reading and walks past a persistent smell has the priorities backwards.
Persistent smell means something is wrong — a blocked vent, a cracked tank, a failed seal. That needs a plumber, not a consultant.
Distance and Water Sources
A tank close to the building or to a borewell is a practical problem before it is a traditional one. Where a water source is nearby, get the water tested; contamination is not something to reason about from a compass.
Local building codes generally specify minimum distances from structures and water sources, and those figures exist for good reason.
Drainage Direction
Waste water is traditionally directed to drain towards the north or north-east, following the same slope preference the tradition has for a plot generally.
This is one of the easier things to get right when a property is being built, and one of the harder ones to change afterwards.
When It Is Already in a Poor Zone
Relocating a septic tank is major excavation, and it is very rarely justified on placement grounds alone.
Keep it sealed. Keep it maintained. Have it emptied on schedule. Then put the effort into the zones you can actually change, of which there are many — the whole home summary shows where those are.
A household worrying about a tank they cannot move, while the entrance is cluttered and the north-east is full of storage, has the effort in the wrong place.
