What Yogini Dasha Is
A dasha system of eight periods — the yoginis — running one, two, three and so on up to eight years. The eight together make a 36-year cycle, which repeats.
It is much shorter than Vimshottari's 120 years, and correspondingly simpler. Most people live through three complete Yogini cycles and only part of one Vimshottari.
How It Is Derived
Two fixed rules, both checkable by hand.
The starting yogini is the Moon's nakshatra number plus three, taken modulo eight. The balance remaining at birth is the unelapsed fraction of that nakshatra applied to the starting yogini's length.
Everything after that runs in fixed order at fixed lengths. There is no judgement anywhere in the calculation, which is why two correctly computed Yogini timelines always agree.
The Eight
Mangala (1 year, Moon) is associated with gain and is traditionally the gentlest. Pingala (2, Sun) with effort and authority. Dhanya (3, Jupiter) with prosperity and learning. Bhramari (4, Mars) with movement and dispersal.
Bhadrika (5, Mercury) with communication and steady progress. Ulka (6, Saturn) with difficulty and delay. Siddha (7, Venus) with success and comfort, traditionally the most favourable. Sankata (8, Rahu) with obstruction, and the longest of the eight.
How It Is Used Alongside Vimshottari
Not instead of it. Vimshottari is the primary dasha system in Vedic astrology and carries far more weight in practice.
Yogini is used as a secondary confirmation. Where both systems point the same way for a period, that agreement is treated as strengthening the reading. Where they diverge, Vimshottari is generally given precedence.
Its shorter periods also make it useful for finer timing within a long Vimshottari mahadasha, in much the same way an antardasha is.
Reading the Difficult Ones
Ulka and Sankata carry the least favourable descriptions, and the same caution applies as everywhere in dasha reading.
These are periods that tend to ask for more effort. They are not sentences, and they are frequently the periods in which people build things, because the pressure is real and the easy routes stop working.
Someone told that a six-year Ulka is coming, and who spends it apprehensive and postponing decisions, has lost the six years to the anticipation rather than to the period.
Where It Sits in the Tradition
Yogini Dasha is a genuine classical system, described in the standard texts, and it is used more in some regional traditions than others. It is less universally applied than Vimshottari, and that is a matter of regional practice rather than of one being better.
What it is not is an obscure or invented system. If a practitioner uses it, that is normal; if one does not, that is equally normal.
