Basement & Parking

Excavation follows the same rule as water: depth belongs in the north-east, since that is the zone meant to be lowest.

About the Basement

Why Depth Follows the Water Rule

The north-east is meant to be the lowest and lightest part of a property. That is why underground water belongs there, and it is the same reason a basement or excavated area does.

The south-west is meant to be the heaviest and most solid. Excavating under it hollows out exactly the zone that should be carrying the building's weight, which is why it is the least preferred position.

North and east follow the north-east as favourable. The north-west and west are not preferred, and the south and south-east are avoided.

What a Basement Should Be Used For

Parking is the most common use and entirely suitable. Utility, laundry or plant rooms are equally fine. Storage is fine provided it does not become the place things disappear into for a decade.

Living or sleeping space is traditionally avoided, and the practical reasons are the stronger ones: ventilation, damp and daylight. A spare room used occasionally is a different matter from someone sleeping there every night.

Damp Is the Finding

It carries four of sixteen points on its own, and it deserves them.

Damp in a basement damages structure, spreads upward into the floors above, and is a health matter in an enclosed space. It needs waterproofing work rather than any Vastu correction, and it should not wait for a consultation.

Ventilation, Especially With Parking

An enclosed basement without air movement holds damp, fumes and stale air. Where there is parking down there, exhaust fumes are a genuine safety concern and not a traditional one.

Mechanical ventilation, or at minimum a cross-draught, is not optional in an enclosed parking area. This is the kind of thing a Vastu assessment should raise because it is standing in the space, not because the tradition says so.

When It Is Under the South-West

Structural, and not correctable without work no household is going to undertake.

The traditional response is to keep the south-west of the floors above well weighted — heavy furniture, solid storage, the master bedroom where the layout allows — restoring the balance from the level you can actually change.

That pattern repeats throughout Vastu: where something structural sits wrong, the correction is usually elsewhere and non-structural.

Want This Checked Properly?

These tools cover the findings that account for most of what a real assessment turns up, and they are free. What they cannot do is take a compass reading at the centre of your property, see your actual layout, or tell you which two or three corrections matter most for your home rather than in general.

A consultation with Kkomal Vasisht — IAF-certified Vastu consultant, 15+ years, 15,000+ clients guided — does exactly that, in person across Greater Noida and Delhi NCR or by video call anywhere in India and abroad.
