Rashi Chart and Chalit Chart

The rashi chart places a planet in a house according to the sign it occupies. If the ascendant is Leo, everything in Leo is in the first house, everything in Virgo in the second, and so on.

The chalit places it according to degree. Each house is centred on the ascendant's exact degree, so the first house spans fifteen degrees either side of it.

When the ascendant falls near the middle of a sign the two charts largely agree. When it falls very early or very late, planets near sign boundaries can land in different houses.

Why This Matters

Because a planet can be in one house by sign and the next by degree, and the two readings give different answers.

A planet at twenty-eight degrees of a sign, with an ascendant early in its own sign, may be counted in the tenth house by rashi and the eleventh by chalit. Career or gains — a real difference in what the chart is saying.

Classical practice resolves this by reading sign relationships from the rashi chart and results from the chalit. The two are used together, not one instead of the other.

Which Planets Are Affected

Only those near a sign boundary relative to your ascendant degree. In many charts no planet moves at all, and that is a perfectly normal result rather than a sign that something is missing.

Where several planets move, the chalit is doing real work in that chart, and any reading that ignores it will misplace them.

Where Birth Time Accuracy Bites

This is the most practical thing on the page.

The chalit is built entirely on the ascendant degree, which moves about one degree every four minutes. A birth time wrong by twenty minutes shifts every house cusp by five degrees, and planets near a boundary can move house as a result.

The rashi chart tolerates this better, since the ascendant only changes sign every two hours or so. The chalit does not.

If your recorded birth time is uncertain — and for many people it is remembered rather than documented — the chalit is the chart that will be wrong first. That is a genuine argument for rectification before relying on it.

Equal Houses and Other Systems

This page uses equal thirty-degree bhavas centred on the ascendant degree, which is the most common approach in Indian practice.

Other house systems exist — Sripati, Placidus and others — and divide the houses unequally by different rules. They will give slightly different cusps. This is a genuine methodological difference rather than a matter of one being correct, and practitioners differ on it.
