Three Cycles, Nested

The personal year, month and day are the same idea at three scales, each derived from the one above it.

The personal year comes from your birth day and month added to the current year. It runs from birthday to birthday, not from January — which is why yours changes on your birthday and not on New Year's Day.

The personal month adds the calendar month to the personal year. The personal day adds the date to the personal month.

So a day number only means something read against the month and year containing it. A 1 day in a 9 year is a small beginning inside a period of endings, which is a different thing from a 1 day in a 1 year.

The Nine Day Themes

1 for starting and deciding. 2 for cooperating rather than pushing. 3 for talking, writing and being understood. 4 for detail and admin. 5 for change and interruption.

6 for family and responsibility. 7 for thinking and study. 8 for money and decisions with consequence. 9 for finishing and clearing out.

What This Is Actually Good For

Slotting the right kind of task into the right day, when you have the freedom to choose.

If a week contains a 4 day and a 3 day, doing the paperwork on the 4 and the presentation on the 3 costs nothing and may well go better. That is the honest scale of the claim.

What it is not good for is deciding whether to leave the house, whether to take a call, or whether a difficult day was difficult because of a number. Reading a bad day backwards into a number teaches you nothing and makes the next one worse.

The Nine-Year Cycle

Personal years run 1 through 9 and then repeat, so the shape of a life in nine-year blocks is the more useful thing here.

A 1 year tends to set the direction for the eight that follow. A 9 year tends to close things out, and resisting the endings in it makes it harder than it needs to be. A 4 year is effortful and builds; a 5 year disrupts.

People frequently recognise their own past in this pattern when it is laid out, which is the strongest thing that can honestly be said for it.

Where the Year Actually Turns

On your birthday. Before it, the previous personal year still applies, which this page accounts for — a common error in simpler tools that switch on 1 January and give the wrong number for everyone born after that date.

Some practitioners treat the transition as gradual, with the new year's character arriving over a month or two. Others treat it as a clean switch. Both views exist in practice.
