What the Dashamsha Is

The Dashamsha, or D10, is the tenth divisional chart and the one read for career and profession. Each sign of thirty degrees is divided into ten parts of three degrees each, and every planet falls into one of them.

The starting point of the division depends on the quality of the sign. Movable signs count from themselves, fixed signs from the ninth sign onward, and dual signs from the fifth. That is why a planet in the same degree of two different signs lands in different D10 positions.

Why Career Gets Its Own Chart

The tenth house of the birth chart shows the outline of working life — standing, profession, public role. The D10 is treated as the detail underneath that outline.

The practical consequence is that a tenth house looking strong in the birth chart can sit weakly in the D10, which is traditionally read as a career promising more than it delivers. The reverse describes someone whose working life turns out more substantial than their chart first suggests.

This is why a career reading that examines only the birth chart can be technically correct and still miss the thing the person came to ask about.

What Is Actually Read in a D10

The D10 ascendant and its lord set the tone. Where it matches the birth ascendant, that is read as consistency between how someone appears professionally and how they actually work.

The tenth house of the D10 and its lord is the single most examined factor. Its sign, its condition in the birth chart, and the periods when it becomes active through the Dasha sequence are what a career analysis turns on.

The position of the tenth lord of the birth chart within the D10 is read alongside it, as is the placement of the Sun, Saturn and Mercury, which relate to authority, sustained work and analytical capacity respectively.

What a Divisional Chart Cannot Tell You

Timing, which is where most career questions actually sit.

When a change is supported, when a difficult stretch is likely to ease, when sustained effort is likely to convert into something visible — none of that comes from a divisional chart. It comes from the Dasha sequence read against these positions, and that requires interpretation rather than a table.

A D10 also cannot tell you what field to enter in the sense people usually mean. It indicates tendencies and areas of natural ease. Interest, opportunity, education and effort decide the rest, and they weigh heavily.

Birth Time Accuracy

The D10 changes every three degrees of the zodiac, which means roughly every twelve minutes of birth time. That is comparable to the Navamsa and considerably faster than the ascendant.

An approximate or rounded birth time can therefore produce a birth chart that is broadly right and a D10 that is entirely wrong — which is one of the more common reasons career readings feel off despite a reading being accurate about the person in general.

Where a birth time is uncertain, rectifying it first is worth more than any career reading built on a guess.
