About the Vedic Birth Chart (Kundli)
Your Kundli — also called a Vedic birth chart, Janam Patrika or Janma Kundali — is a precise map of the positions of all the planets at the exact moment of your birth, drawn from the perspective of your birth location. It is the foundation of Vedic astrology (Jyotish): every prediction, timing analysis, compatibility assessment and guidance given by a Vedic astrologer starts from this chart.
The word Kundli comes from Sanskrit, meaning "coiled" or "circular" — it refers to the coiled form of the chart, which maps the celestial sphere onto a geometric representation. In North India, the chart is traditionally drawn as a diamond-shaped grid (the North Indian style used here). In South India, the chart is drawn as a square grid. Both contain exactly the same information — they are different visual conventions for the same astronomical data.
What a Kundli Shows
A Vedic birth chart shows the positions of nine celestial bodies — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu — in the sidereal zodiac at the moment of birth. Each planet occupies one of the twelve houses of the chart, and one of the twelve zodiac signs. The combination of which planet sits in which house and which sign, along with the aspects (planetary sight lines) between planets, forms the basis of the entire reading.
The twelve houses of a Kundli each govern a different domain of life: the first house governs the self and body; the second, wealth and family; the third, courage and siblings; the fourth, home and mother; the fifth, education and children; the sixth, health and obstacles; the seventh, marriage and partnerships; the eighth, transformation and hidden matters; the ninth, fortune and dharma; the tenth, career and public life; the eleventh, gains and networks; the twelfth, loss and liberation.
The North Indian Kundli Chart: How to Read It
In the North Indian chart style, the Lagna (Ascendant) is always placed in the topmost diamond of the grid. The twelve houses are fixed positions in the grid — the Lagna house is at top, and the remaining houses follow in a clockwise direction. The numbers inside the houses are the rashi (sign) numbers (Aries=1, Taurus=2, through to Pisces=12), and the letters inside are abbreviated planet names. This is the chart style most commonly used across North, Central and Western India.

What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology charts?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — aligned with the actual constellations — while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, these two zodiacs currently differ by about 23-24 degrees, meaning most planets in a Vedic chart are about one sign earlier than in a Western chart. Vedic astrology also uses different house systems (Whole Sign being the Parashari classical standard), the lunar nodes as planets (Rahu and Ketu), and predictive timing systems like Vimshottari Dasha that have no Western equivalent.
Is the birth time important for making a Kundli?
Yes — the birth time is essential for an accurate Kundli. The Ascendant (Lagna) changes approximately every two hours, so even a difference of one hour can change your Lagna sign entirely, which shifts all twelve houses and changes the entire interpretation. The Moon sign can also change within the birth day. For best results, use the birth time as recorded in the birth certificate or hospital records. If the exact time is unknown, a Vedic astrologer can perform chart rectification using known life events to determine the probable birth time.
What does the Lagna (Ascendant) mean in a Kundli?
The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment and place. It changes approximately every two hours. In Vedic astrology, the Lagna is the first house — it governs your physical body, your natural approach to life, your first impressions and the overall orientation of your chart. All twelve houses are numbered from the Lagna. The Lagna lord (the ruling planet of the Lagna sign) is one of the most important planets in your chart and its placement significantly shapes your life direction.
What are the nine planets (Navagrahas) in Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology uses nine celestial bodies called the Navagrahas: Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Brihaspati/Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), and the two lunar nodes Rahu (North Node) and Ketu (South Node). Uranus, Neptune and Pluto — the outer planets used in Western astrology — are not used in classical Jyotish, though some modern Vedic astrologers incorporate them. What is the Whole Sign house system?
The Whole Sign house system, used here following Parashari classical tradition, assigns one entire zodiac sign to each house. The sign that contains your Lagna degree becomes the first house in its entirety; the next sign becomes the second house, and so on. This means every house spans exactly 30° and house boundaries coincide with sign boundaries. It is the oldest house system in Vedic astrology and is the foundation of Parashari Jyotish. Other systems (Placidus, Koch, Equal House) are used in some modern Vedic approaches but Whole Sign is the classical standard.
What is the Lahiri Ayanamsa?
The ayanamsa is the correction value that converts tropical planetary positions (used in Western astrology and by astronomical ephemerides) to sidereal positions (used in Vedic astrology). The Lahiri ayanamsa, named after N.C. Lahiri, is the official ayanamsa of the Indian government's ephemeris committee and is the most widely used in modern Jyotish. As of 2024, the Lahiri ayanamsa value is approximately 23°58'. This means Vedic planet positions are about 24° earlier than their Western tropical equivalents — which is why your Vedic Sun sign may differ from your Western Sun sign.
How do I read the planetary table in my Kundli result?
The planetary table shows each of the nine planets with its sign (zodiac sign it occupies), degree (exact position within that sign in degrees, minutes and seconds), nakshatra (the lunar mansion it falls in), pada (the quarter of the nakshatra), and house (which of the twelve houses it sits in). An "R" marker indicates a retrograde planet — one that appeared to be moving backwards in the sky from Earth's perspective at your birth time. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde and are always in opposite houses exactly.
What does it mean if a planet is retrograde (R) in my Kundli?
A retrograde planet appears to move backwards in the sky when viewed from Earth. Retrograde motion is an optical effect caused by the relative speeds of Earth and the planet in their respective orbits. In Vedic astrology, retrograde planets are considered to have amplified and somewhat internalised energy — they work more powerfully but in less conventional ways. A retrograde Saturn, for example, may bring karma and discipline in unconventional forms. Retrograde Jupiter tends to give wisdom that is developed through internal reflection rather than formal education. Interpretations of retrograde planets vary between Vedic traditions.
