Why Transit Is Read From the Moon

Western astrology generally reads transit from the ascendant. Vedic practice reads it from the natal Moon sign, and that difference is not a technicality — it produces different results and a different emphasis.

The reasoning is that the Moon governs the mind, and transit describes how the current sky is experienced rather than what objectively happens. Counting from the Moon therefore describes what a period feels like from the inside.

The Slow Planets Are What Matter

This is the single most useful thing to understand about transit, and it saves a great deal of unnecessary anxiety.

Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign. Jupiter takes about a year. Rahu and Ketu take about eighteen months. These four shape the texture of a period, and they are the ones worth watching.

The Moon changes sign every two and a half days. Mercury, Venus and the Sun move through a sign in weeks. Reading significance into those is how people end up anxious about an ordinary Tuesday, and it is what daily horoscope columns are built on.

If you check this tool occasionally, look at the four slow movers and largely ignore the rest.

The Houses That Come Up Most

Three positions from the Moon are traditionally considered favourable for almost every planet: the third, the sixth and the eleventh. A difficult planet transiting one of these is generally read as manageable, which is why the same Saturn position affects two people very differently depending on their Moon.

The positions traditionally watched more carefully are the first, fourth, eighth and twelfth from the Moon — and Saturn in the twelfth, first or second is what constitutes Sade Sati.

Jupiter is the exception to most of this, being generally welcome and read favourably in the second, fifth, seventh, ninth and eleventh.

Transit and Dasha Together

Transit alone is a partial picture and this deserves stating plainly, because transit is what free tools show and Dasha is what they do not.

The Dasha sequence sets the broad conditions of a stretch of life, running for years at a time. Transit acts as a trigger within it. A challenging transit during a supportive Dasha tends to pass as a rough patch. The same transit during a demanding Dasha is felt considerably more.

This is why two people can have identical transits and entirely different experiences, and why an astrologer reading only transit will produce generic results.

What This Tool Is Good For

Knowing where the slow planets currently sit relative to your Moon, and therefore what area of life is currently under emphasis. That is genuinely useful for planning — if Saturn is in your tenth from the Moon, work is the area asking for attention, and knowing that shapes how you approach the next couple of years.

What it is not good for is prediction. A transit position indicates emphasis, not events, and anyone converting a transit table into specific predictions is inventing the specificity.
