About the Janma Nakshatra (Birth Star)

The Nakshatra is one of the most ancient and precise tools in Vedic astrology. The word means "that which does not decay" — the fixed stars of the sky. While Western astrology divides the zodiac into 12 signs, Vedic Jyotish uses 27 (sometimes 28) nakshatras — lunar mansions of approximately 13°20' each — that the Moon passes through in its monthly journey around the Earth. Your Janma Nakshatra (birth nakshatra) is the mansion the Moon occupied at the moment you were born.

The nakshatra system is older than the rashi (sign) system in Indian astronomical tradition. References to the 27 nakshatras appear in the Vedas, the Atharva Veda and the Vedanga Jyotisha — texts dating back thousands of years. The nakshatra your Moon sits in at birth is considered your fundamental identity marker in many Hindu traditions: it determines your naming syllables, your Vimshottari Dasha starting point, your energy type in marriage matching and your connection to specific deities and cosmic forces.

The 27 Nakshatras: A Complete Overview

Each nakshatra has a presiding deity, a ruling planet, a symbol, a gana (nature category — divine, human or demonic), a nadi (energy channel) and specific qualities that it brings to the Moon placed within it. The 27 nakshatras and their ruling planets are:

Ashwini (Ketu) · Bharani (Venus) · Krittika (Sun) · Rohini (Moon) · Mrigashira (Mars) · Ardra (Rahu) · Punarvasu (Jupiter) · Pushya (Saturn) · Ashlesha (Mercury) · Magha (Ketu) · Purva Phalguni (Venus) · Uttara Phalguni (Sun) · Hasta (Moon) · Chitra (Mars) · Swati (Rahu) · Vishakha (Jupiter) · Anuradha (Saturn) · Jyeshtha (Mercury) · Mula (Ketu) · Purva Ashadha (Venus) · Uttara Ashadha (Sun) · Shravana (Moon) · Dhanishtha (Mars) · Shatabhisha (Rahu) · Purva Bhadrapada (Jupiter) · Uttara Bhadrapada (Saturn) · Revati (Mercury)

Nakshatra Padas: The Four Quarters

Each nakshatra is further divided into four padas (quarters) of 3°20' each. There are therefore 108 padas in total across the 27 nakshatras — a number considered sacred in Hinduism, corresponding to the 108 beads of a mala and appearing throughout Vedic tradition. The pada further refines the reading: it maps the nakshatra to the navamsa chart and to a specific syllable used for naming children in the Vedic tradition.

The Nakshatra and Vimshottari Dasha

Your Janma Nakshatra determines where your Vimshottari Dasha sequence begins. The 120-year cycle of planetary periods is assigned a starting point based on the nakshatra lord of your birth Moon. If you were born with the Moon in Rohini (lorded by the Moon), your dasha sequence begins with Moon Mahadasha. If born in Ashwini (lorded by Ketu), you begin with Ketu Mahadasha. This is why the nakshatra is so fundamental to predictive Vedic astrology — it sets the entire timing framework of your life.

Nakshatra in Marriage Matching (Kundli Milan)

The nakshatra is central to the traditional Ashtakoot matching system used for marriage compatibility. Of the eight areas assessed (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi), at least four are derived directly from the nakshatra of the bride and groom's Moon signs. The Nadi factor — which assesses the energy channel (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) of each person's nakshatra — carries the most points (8 out of 36) and is traditionally considered critical. Two people with the same Nadi are believed to be incompatible in traditional matching.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Janma Nakshatra and why is it important?

Janma Nakshatra is the lunar mansion (one of 27 divisions of the zodiac) occupied by the Moon at your birth. It is important because it determines your Vimshottari Dasha starting planet (the beginning of your life's planetary timing sequence), the syllable traditionally used as the first sound of your name in Hindu naming ceremonies (Namakarana Samskara), your compatibility category in Vedic marriage matching and your connection to a specific deity, symbol and set of qualities that characterise your innate nature.

How is the nakshatra different from the Moon sign (Rashi)?

Your Moon sign (Rashi) is one of 12 signs, each spanning 30°. Your nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, each spanning 13°20'. The nakshatra is a subdivision within the sign — it provides greater precision. For example, Moon in Aries could be in Ashwini, Bharani or the early degrees of Krittika nakshatra. Both the rashi and the nakshatra are used together in Vedic astrology — the rashi gives the broad emotional quality and the nakshatra refines it significantly.

What are the nakshatras with their ruling planets?

The 27 nakshatras are governed by 9 planets in a repeating cycle: Ketu (Ashwini, Magha, Mula), Venus (Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha), Sun (Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha), Moon (Rohini, Hasta, Shravana), Mars (Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha), Rahu (Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha), Jupiter (Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada), Saturn (Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada), Mercury (Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati). The nakshatra lord determines which Mahadasha period you begin at birth.

What is Gana and how does it relate to the nakshatra?

Gana refers to the temperamental category of a nakshatra — Deva (divine/sattvic), Manushya (human/rajasic) or Rakshasa (demonic/tamasic). These terms describe the predominant energy quality rather than moral character. Deva gana nakshatras are associated with idealistic, patient qualities; Manushya gana with practical, human-scale concerns; Rakshasa gana with intensity, focus and boundary-challenging energy. In marriage matching, same-gana compatibility is assessed — particularly Deva-Rakshasa combinations require compensating factors elsewhere in the chart.

What do the Nadi types (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) mean in nakshatra matching?

Nadi refers to the energy channel associated with each nakshatra, based on Ayurvedic constitutional types. The three nadis — Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) and Antya (Kapha) — are assigned to the 27 nakshatras in groups of nine. When two people share the same Nadi, traditional Vedic matching considers this a Nadi Dosha — a significant incompatibility — because it can indicate health challenges for children or difficulty in the couple's overall energetic compatibility. It is the highest-weighted factor in Ashtakoot matching.

Can nakshatra affect my personality and career?

Yes — the nakshatra, its ruling planet, its deity and its symbol all carry qualities that shape your innate temperament, interests and aptitudes. For example, Ashwini nakshatra (Ketu-ruled, Ashwini Kumars as deity) is associated with healing, speed and the drive to initiate — giving people born under it aptitude for medicine, sports and entrepreneurship. Pushya nakshatra (Saturn-ruled, Brihaspati as deity) is associated with nourishment, responsibility and the capacity to sustain — giving those born under it qualities ideal for teaching, healthcare and community leadership.

What is Abhijit nakshatra and why is it sometimes counted as a 28th?

Abhijit is a small nakshatra that corresponds to the star Vega and occupies a narrow band in late Capricorn/early Aquarius. It is used primarily for muhurta (auspicious timing) selection rather than birth charts. In the 27-nakshatra system used for birth charts and dasha calculation, Abhijit is generally not included. In the 28-nakshatra system sometimes referenced in older texts, it appears. For practical purposes in modern Jyotish — birth charts, dasha, marriage matching — the 27-nakshatra system is standard.

What is the significance of the nakshatra in a naming ceremony?

In the Hindu Namakarana Samskara (naming ceremony), the first syllable of the child's name is chosen from a table of syllables associated with the child's birth nakshatra and pada. This practice connects the child's name to the cosmic energy of their birth star through sound. For example, a child born in Rohini nakshatra, first pada, would be given a name beginning with "O". The naming syllable ensures that every time the child's name is spoken, the sound resonates with the energy of their birth nakshatra.

How accurate is an online nakshatra calculator?

Accuracy depends entirely on the ephemeris and method used. Our calculator uses the Swiss Ephemeris — the most accurate astronomical ephemeris available for this purpose — combined with the Lahiri ayanamsa (the official ayanamsa of the Government of India's ephemeris). Your birth time is converted to Universal Time using historical IST rules, and the Moon's sidereal longitude is calculated precisely for your exact birth moment and location. This is the same computational method used by professional Jyotish software.

What is the progress percentage shown in the nakshatra result?

The progress percentage shows how far the Moon had moved through your nakshatra at the time of your birth. 0% means the Moon had just entered that nakshatra; 100% means it was about to leave it. This has practical significance: the Moon's position within the nakshatra can be used to calculate the remaining balance of that nakshatra's Dasha lord at the time of birth — which is how the Vimshottari Dasha starting point and balance are computed. It also indicates which nakshatra you were close to and where the boundaries lie.

What your nakshatra means in practice

Gana, nadi and yoni are used in marriage matching; the nakshatra lord sets your dasha timeline. Reading those together is where the real guidance is.
