About Vimshottari Dasha — The Planetary Period System
The Vimshottari Dasha system is Vedic astrology's primary timing tool — the method by which a Jyotishi determines when specific life events are likely to occur. Vimshottari means "120" in Sanskrit, referring to the total duration of the system's cycle: 120 years, divided among nine planetary periods. How the 120-Year Vimshottari Cycle Works
The nine planets are assigned specific periods in the 120-year cycle: Sun 6 years, Moon 10 years, Mars 7 years, Rahu 18 years, Jupiter 16 years, Saturn 19 years, Mercury 17 years, Ketu 7 years, Venus 20 years. The starting point of this cycle is determined by your birth Moon's nakshatra and its lord. If you were born with the Moon in Ashwini (lorded by Ketu), your first period is Ketu Mahadasha. If in Rohini (lorded by Moon), it begins with Moon Mahadasha. The balance of the first period is calculated from exactly how far the Moon had progressed through its nakshatra at birth.
Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha
Each Mahadasha (major period) is subdivided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods) in the same planetary sequence. Each Antardasha is further divided into Pratyantardashas (sub-sub-periods). This creates a three-level timing system of remarkable precision. Significant life events typically correspond to specific Mahadasha-Antardasha combinations — where the themes of both planets interact in the context of your specific chart. The "balance of Dasha at birth" refers to how much of the first Dasha period remained when you were born. If the Moon was 50% through Rohini nakshatra (ruled by Moon) at birth, you were born halfway through Moon Mahadasha and had approximately 5 years of Moon Mahadasha remaining before Mars Mahadasha began. This balance is calculated from the exact position of the Moon within its nakshatra at birth. It explains why two people with the same Moon nakshatra can be in very different Dashas at the same age — depending on where in the nakshatra their Moon falls.
