How a Registration Number Is Reduced

Only the digits are used. State codes, letters and spaces are ignored, so DL 3C AB 1234 reduces from 31234: 3+1+2+3+4 = 13, then 1+3 = 4. The root is 4.

That root is then compared against your Moolank, taken from your day of birth, and your Bhagyank, taken from your full date. A number is friendly, neutral or unfriendly relative to you rather than in the abstract.

Why This One Is Worth Checking

Unlike a mobile number, which is tied to your bank, UPI and every contact you have, a vehicle registration is one of the few numbers people genuinely get to choose — and only once, at the moment of registration.

Several Indian states allow you to pick from available numbers, sometimes at a small premium for preferred ones. If you are picking anyway, picking well costs nothing extra. That is the honest case for doing this.

Learn the Method and Stop Asking

Your favourable roots are shown with your result. Once you know them, the method is trivially simple: add the digits of any candidate registration, reduce to one digit, and see whether it appears in your list.

That takes about ten seconds per number, and it means you never need to pay anyone to check an individual number again. Anyone charging repeatedly for this is selling something you can do standing at the RTO counter.

If the Vehicle Is Already Registered

Note the result and move on.

Changing a registration number is a genuine administrative undertaking, and it is disproportionate to what a root number represents. A neutral or mildly unfriendly number on a vehicle you already own is not worth acting on, and anyone suggesting otherwise is not weighing the cost honestly.

Keeping It in Proportion

A vehicle number does not make a vehicle safe. Driving carefully, maintaining it properly, and being insured matter immeasurably more than a digit, and no responsible practitioner would suggest otherwise.

Be particularly wary of paying a large premium for a specific registration on numerological grounds. A favourable number is a small pleasant alignment. It is not worth a significant sum, and the market for fancy registrations knows how to exploit people who think it is.

Other Numbers You Can Check the Same Way

The method applies to any number that stays with you: a flat number, an account number, a locker number. The useful distinction is always the same one — where you have a free choice at no extra cost, choose well; where the number is already fixed, note it and let it go.

Most numbers in life fall in the second category, which is worth remembering before spending much attention on any of them.
