What Each One Means
What Choghadiya Is
Choghadiya divides the day into eight muhurats between sunrise and sunset, and the night into eight more between sunset and the next sunrise. Each carries a name and a traditional reading.
It is the most widely used quick muhurat in western and northern India — consulted for setting out on a journey, opening a shop, making a purchase or picking an hour for something modest that does not warrant a full muhurat calculation.
The Eight Names
Amrit is the most favourable and is suitable for anything. Shubh is auspicious, traditionally favoured for ceremonies. Labh means gain and is preferred for trade and transactions. Char means movable and suits travel.
Udveg, Kaal and Rog are the three traditionally avoided for beginnings. Udveg is often excepted for government and routine work, and Kaal is regarded by some as acceptable for accumulating wealth.
The names rotate in a fixed cycle. The weekday decides where the sequence starts, and the night sequence begins five places further along than the day — which is why the same name falls at different times on different days.
Why These Timings Differ From a Printed Chart
Because the muhurats are eighths of the actual day and night, not fixed 90-minute blocks.
A summer day in Delhi gives day muhurats of about 105 minutes and night muhurats of about 75. In December it reverses. A printed chart assuming a six-to-six day is right twice a year and approximate the rest of the time, and it is wrong by a different amount in Chennai than in Delhi.

How Much Weight to Give It
Choghadiya is a light tool and is used as one. It is a reasonable way to pick an hour within a day you have already chosen, and it takes ten seconds to check.
What it is not is a substitute for a muhurat. A wedding, a griha pravesh or a business registration deserves a date and time calculated from the panchang and the charts of the people involved. Choghadiya looks only at the weekday and the position within the day.
And where something must happen at a fixed time, it happens. Waiting ninety minutes for Amrit to arrive is sensible when you are free to wait, and not when you are not.
Day and Night Both Matter
The night table is often ignored, and it is genuinely used — for late travel, for overnight journeys, for anything beginning after dark. It follows exactly the same logic, measured from sunset to the following sunrise.
When a Muhurat Is Worth Having
Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya and Hora are quick checks. They look at the weekday and the position within the day, and they are genuinely useful for picking an hour once the day is already settled — setting out on a journey, opening a shop, signing something routine.
What they cannot do is choose a date. A marriage, a griha pravesh, a business registration or a property purchase is decided from the full panchang weighed against the ascendant rising at the specific hour and the birth charts of the people involved. That produces a date and a narrow time window, and it is a different calculation entirely.
