Office Seating Check
For an office, a shop counter or a desk at home. Everything scored here can be changed by moving furniture — which is why seating is the most actionable correction in any workspace.
About Your Desk
Why Seating Is the Most Actionable Correction
Everything scored here can be changed by moving furniture. No structural work, no permission, no cost. In an office that has been laid out by whoever installed the desks, that makes seating the first place to look.
It is also where people spend the most concentrated hours of their working day, which is why the effect of getting it right tends to be noticed quickly.
Your Back to the Door
This carries the heaviest weight in the check above, and it is the most cited seating finding in any workspace.
Sitting with your back to the door means being unable to see who enters, which produces a low-level alertness that runs all day without being consciously noticed. The traditional guidance and ordinary ergonomics agree here entirely, and the correction is usually just turning the desk.
Where the room genuinely permits only that arrangement, a mirror positioned so the door is visible from the seat is the standard practical response.
Solid Support Behind You
A solid wall behind the working seat is the traditional preference, and a partition serves much of the same purpose. A window behind you is what is avoided.
Again the reasoning is not mysterious: something solid behind a seat is settling, and a window behind means glare on screens and passing movement in peripheral vision. Where a desk cannot move, a high-backed chair helps.
Facing Direction
North and east are the most favoured directions to face while working — north associated with opportunity, income and communication, east with clarity and steady energy through the day.
West is acceptable. South and south-west are the least preferred for facing. The distinction people often miss is that in the south-west you should sit and face out of it, not face into it.
Which Zone Suits Which Role
The south-west is the traditional seat for an owner, director or anyone whose decisions carry weight — it is the zone of stability and authority. The north suits sales, marketing and anyone whose work is about bringing things in. The east suits advisory, teaching and analytical roles. The north-west suits roles involving movement, travel or client contact.
The north-east is better kept open and light than filled with a fixed desk, and the south-east is the fire zone, better suited to equipment than to seating.
In a small office where the whole team sits in one room, this is thought of as zones within the room rather than separate areas — the senior seat toward the south-west corner of the space, and so on.
The Desk Itself
Beyond what this tool scores: keep the desk surface clear at the end of each day, keep heavier items and storage toward the south and west side of the desk, and keep the area in front of you open rather than blocked by monitors and files stacked at the edge.
None of that is dramatic, and all of it is free. A cluttered desk is a Vastu finding and a practical one, and the two agree.
Working From Home
The same principles apply to a desk in a bedroom or living room, with one addition worth knowing: a workspace inside a bedroom is not ideal, since the room is meant for rest and a visible desk keeps work present.
Where there is no alternative — which in a flat there frequently is not — position the desk away from the bed rather than beside it, and use a screen or a curtain to separate the two visually if the space allows.
Want This Checked Properly?
These tools cover the findings that account for most of what a real assessment turns up, and they are free. What they cannot do is take a compass reading at the centre of your property, see your actual layout, or tell you which two or three corrections matter most for your home rather than in general.
A consultation with Kkomal Vasisht — IAF-certified Vastu consultant, 15+ years, 15,000+ clients guided — does exactly that, in person across Greater Noida and Delhi NCR or by video call anywhere in India and abroad.
