Balcony & Open Space

In a flat this is the main source of light and air — and the first space to quietly become an overflow store. Clearing one changes how the whole home feels.

About the Balcony

Why the Balcony Matters More in a Flat

In an independent house, open space is the plot around the building. In a flat, the balcony is very often the only open space there is — the main source of natural light, cross-ventilation and any connection to outside.

That makes it disproportionately important, and it is also why it is the first space to quietly become an overflow store. Clutter carries four of fourteen points in the check above, more than the zone, precisely because the zone is fixed and the clutter is not.

The Preferred Zones

The north-east is the best zone for open space — light and openness are exactly what that zone wants. The north and east are equally favourable, the east bringing morning light into the home.

The north-west is workable and common. The west, south and south-east are less preferred, since the southern and western half of a property is meant to carry weight rather than openings.

A Balcony in the South-West

A common finding in modern flats, and one worth understanding rather than worrying about.

The south-west is meant to be the heaviest, most enclosed part of a home, and a balcony opens it. But the balcony is structural — it is not going anywhere, and enclosing it is rarely permitted by a society and rarely sensible.

The correction is not to the balcony at all. It is to add weight elsewhere in that quadrant — heavy furniture, solid storage, the master bedroom where the layout allows. That is the standard response, it is entirely non-structural, and it addresses what the finding is actually about.

Clutter Is the Real Finding

Almost every balcony assessment comes down to the same thing. Old furniture, cartons, unused appliances, paint tins, things that were going to be dealt with. It accumulates gradually and residents stop seeing it.

Clearing a balcony is free, takes an afternoon, and is one of the changes households most consistently report noticing — because it restores light and air to rooms adjoining it, not just to the balcony itself.

Plants, and the Honest Note About Them

Healthy greenery suits a balcony in almost any zone and is traditionally favoured toward the east and north.

But a dying plant works against the purpose it was placed for, and two thriving plants do more than eight struggling ones. If plants on your balcony are neglected, removing them is a better correction than adding more.

Heavy or large plants are kept out of the north-east specifically, where lightness is wanted. Thorny plants are traditionally kept out of living areas generally.

Give It a Reason to Be Used

This is the part that determines whether a cleared balcony stays cleared.

A space nobody visits drifts back into being a store within months, whatever you take out of it today. A chair, a small table, a light so it is usable after dark — anything that gives someone a reason to step out there keeps it in use, and a used space does not accumulate.

That is a more durable correction than clearing it once, and it costs very little.

Want This Checked Properly?

These tools cover the findings that account for most of what a real assessment turns up, and they are free. What they cannot do is take a compass reading at the centre of your property, see your actual layout, or tell you which two or three corrections matter most for your home rather than in general.
